The building of the inclined railways began in 1870 and ended in 1901. During that time period, there have been 23 inclines built and operated in the city. The only two remaining are the Monongahela (1870) and the Duquesne (1877). Both offer unique and exciting views of downtown Pittsburgh, especially at night. Two-rail inclines were built to provide passenger service to workers travelling the steep hills from their homes to factories and to downtown businesses. Both inclines still carry workers to and from their jobs in downtown Pittsburgh – and they continue to be very special tourist attractions. If you have the time, don’t miss this unusual way to “ride the rails”!

Point State ParkThis park is located in downtown Pittsburgh where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio river.
